The knock sensor senses engine knocks or detonations and signals the ECM to adjust timing in order to prevent knocking. The knock indicates the presence of pre-ignition; in extreme cases, leaving this issue unaddressed can lead to catastrophic and expensive damage to the engine. Therefore, it is vital that a faulty knock sensor is replaced as soon as possible.
